It’s recently been announced that Marvel Comics will launch a line of comics for women, all done by women.

I’ve always found Marvel to be rather mysoginystic and not quite considerate to any female readership. They are exploited and dressed up as ornaments, simply meant to be eye candy vs. real, capable characters.
The idea of female based comics is great, in my opinion. More prominent female creators working for major titles is also a wonderful idea. Too bad it’s taken till now with such a small and piddling contribution to an idea that should have been adopted years ago.
DC Comics seemed to get it and have worked with it far longer and with better results.
Sadly, Marvel’s EIC, Joe Quesada makes some silly and befuddling statement in response to the criticism of his company’s comics and their stance on female characters:
“If you’re [a] Marvel reader and truly feel we’re sexist, then why are you reading our books? Now, perhaps you’re not a Marvel reader, then if that’s the case, I’m not quite sure what you’re criticizing if you don’t read our books?”

Yeah, how dare you read, if all you’re gonna do is complain! And if you don’t read, you don’t know what you’re complaining about! So, essentially, it comes down to: “We wouldn’t have these problems if it weren’t for those pesky readers!”
I gave up on Marvel when the price hike took effect. $3.99 for most of Marvel’s line was not worth it, to me. And to hear that Joey Q made thinly veiled claims that the price hike happened simply because they could do it appalled me. I didn’t manage to make any difference, voting with my wallet, as DC followed the price hike. Naturally, that was to be expected, but I had small hope of change.
I enjoy female characters and female creators, and while I’m interested in how the Marvel book will fare, I’m saddened that it may not make that much of a difference in the long run. Marvel will do as they’ve done and let the book go till they decide that it didn’t work and will kill it before too long.
